Slate

Slate is a rock that forms from the low-grade metamorphism of the sedimentary rock shale.  The alteration of the shale by heat and pressure produces partings (cleavage) that give slate its layered characteristics.  The wide range in colors found in some slates is the results of the stone being exposed to different atmospheric elements allowing them to oxidize and rust.

VARIATION IS AN INHERENT CHARACTERISTIC OF ALL SLATE, AND ENHANCES THE APPEARANCE OF ANY ROOM.

TYPES:

Gauged/Calibrated:  Refers to the squareness and uniform thickness of the tile.  Although a gauged slate product will never be completely uniform as a tile product, a calibrated product will limit the variation of thickness found within that series.

Ungauged/Uncalibrated:  Products of this type do not have the consistent characteristics of gauged or calibrated.  This does not mean that there are no tolerances.  Usually the tolerances is no more than ½".  This simply provides a natural look.

SLATE CARE & MAINTENANCE

Sealers:

Once the grout has properly cured, it is recommended to seal the stone with a high quality penetrating sealer.  Generally stone sealers are designed to penetrate the stone leaving a non-sheen, natural look and provide protection from liquids that would otherwise absorb into and possibly stain the stone.  Various maintenance products are available to enhance and highlight the character and beauty of the stone while sealing at the same time.

Cleaners:

Do not clean any natural stone with an acidic cleaner, including vinegar, or anything with a lemon or lime on the label.  These products will damage the stone.  It is always recommended to use a cleaner specifically designed for natural stone.
